RUNI – THE ONE WHO WARMS THE FORGOTTEN
(As told in the hush between falling leaves)
Unlike many other Totootse beings who wander and seek, Runi was one of those who came up in the Forest and found her purpose almost at the same time.
She simply appeared in one of those forgotten places — quiet, leaf-covered, waiting — and hugged the first thing she noticed.
It was only later that she learned about the Mosslings.
The warmth keepers of the forest — quiet carriers of presence.
Small creatures made entirely of moss. Most of the time, they look like the sort of moss you might sit on by accident — soft and rounded, tucked at the base of a tree or along a stone. But if you happen to pause long enough, you might notice a small shape curled into itself, as if holding something invisible.
Wherever a Mossling curls into the roots of a tree or softens the edge of a stone, warmth lingers.
Not the heat of sun or fire — but the kind that settles slowly into the earth, made from feeling, from having once been seen.
But if no one comes for a long time — if a place is left too quiet, too unnoticed — the Mossling begins to fade.
Its moss grows pale. The warmth it carries sinks beneath the soil.
That day — the very first — Runi simply appeared near one of these poor fellows.
Not really thinking, still balancing between worlds, she wrapped her scarf around the Mossling — curled like a forgotten ember.
And that was it.
The moss deepened in color. A sprout appeared.
The ground softened. The air changed — not warmer, exactly, but more certain. Runi felt right.
She gently placed the Mossling back in its hollow and stepped into the Forest.
The Mossling remained behind, glowing faintly with remembered warmth.
The place began to feel like it might matter again.
That is Runi’s way.
She leaves warmth where the forest forgot it once lived.
And the Mosslings — the ones who are always there — begin to remember how to keep it again.
